On 23 December 2014 Attorney-General for Australia and Minister for the Arts, Senator the Hon George Brandis QC announced that Shane Simpson has been appointed to review the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 (the PMCH Act)

The PMCH Act holds an important place in Australia's role in protecting the world's cultural heritage and is a key piece of legislation for our collecting institutions. For example, the act empowers the Commonwealth to seize cultural artefacts in Australia that are claimed by a foreign government. This particular provision was exercised recently in the return of an Indian statue of the Goddess Shiva at the request of the Indian government
